4 Tips for Creating an Authentic Summer Solstice Celebration with Family and Friends

Embrace the magic and medicine of High Summer

It’s the longest day of the year. The sun at its peak. We honor the turning of the Wheel of the Year. We give thanks for the sun relinquishing its reign, and allowing us to turn toward the dark. We practice gratitude for the balance it brings.

But mostly, we celebrate the Sun. Oh, glorious SUN that helps everything and everyone grow. It is powerful, and even dangerous at times. We give thanks for all the heat provides.

The Benefits of Celebrating Summer Solstice with Others

Do you like hanging out with your family? That’s what Summer Solstice Celebrations are for. Come together and enjoy each other. Encourage people to shine in their authentic ways. Enjoy time together.

This is a time to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, and mark rites of passages.

It’s also a time to connect with the planet and the energies of your environment, deepening your relationship with the natural world. These sacred gatherings invite us to spend time outside.

Seasonal Celebrations provide us space to tell the stories of our families, our homes, and the land.

But most importantly, it’s fun! A Summer Solstice Gathering with Friends and Family can be playful.

It’s a party!

1. Who / When / Where to Celebrate Summer Solstice

Whoever, whenever, wherever you desire.

That being said, consider the purpose of your celebration.

I am currently reading (and loving) The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker which gives powerful insight into how to craft meaningful celebrations. Her first recommendation is to find a clear purpose. And then,  let that purpose define the who, when, and where. If the purpose of the event is to sing sacred songs to the land, maybe don’t even your friend who hates to sing (or make sure there is a rattle for them to use).

My suggestion, find a purpose that connects people with the land, their hearts, and The Magic.

When in doubt, lean into the following suggestions. They all correspond with Summer Solstice’s climactic / peaking energy.

Where: Outdoors / near Fire + Water.

When: Midday & Sun's peak OR Sunset

Who: Fans - people who cheer you on and support your dreams

2. How to Align with the Energy of the Summer Solstice?

Work with fire. You want to connect with the energy of heat (safely).

  • Meditate on symbols and representations of the sun.

  • Journal

    • What is abundant and/or growing in your life?

    • What are you passionate about? What do you want to pursue?

    • What do you want to make / create?

  • Visualization / Journeying: Connect with the land spirits and ask how you can be of service.

3. Objects and Tools to Use at Summer Solstice Celebration

  • Candle

  • Bonfire

  • Grill

  • Sprinkler /pool

  • Spray bottle with water (add stones / moon water / herbs to boost the magic)

  • Sun Cakes - or any baked goods decorated with suns

  • Foraged Herbs (always done with permission and without taking too much)

  • Golden objects

  • Art supplies - Summer is a time of creativity!

4. Activities You Can Do to Celebrate the Summer Solstice

Go for a Nature Walk.

Or gather with friends and family on the porch, drink Sun Tea, and tell stories of summer days from the past.

Play in water on a hot day: get the sprinkler out, or hang out by the pool.

Work with sun shapes: Decorate the house, make art, or bake with colors and shapes like the sun
