The Archetypes + Symbols of Imbolc
CELEBRATE HEARTH & HOME: Brigid, the Irish Goddess of light and rebirth, is also associated with the life-giving force of the hearth. Tend to your fireplaces and stoves. Traditionally the Irish smoor their fires, extinguishing them for a night. This is a time to dust and tidy your places of heat: honor your oven and bless your home's heat source.
IMBOLC FOODS: BAKED GOODS WITH SEEDS. Breads. Cakes. Healing herbs. Desserts in the shape and color of the sun bring sweetness while honoring the return of the light.
SEEDS: If you are a gardener, use this time to organize and plan your garden. Bless your seeds. Start seeds. Plant seeds infused with your intentions. Eat seeds. Connect with the magic of rebirth & possibility contained within seeds.
SIGNS OF FERTILITY: Imbolc is the time of baby lambs were born. In Old Irish, Imbolc means "In the Belly." Another name for Imbolc is Oimelc, which means "Ewe's Milk." Any sign of new life can be celebrated!
SPRING CLEANING: As the light increases, you start to see the dust bunnies hiding in the corners. The air inside your home can be stuffy and stale. Imbolc season is a time to physically and energetically cleanse your home. Sweep away the dusty, old energies in your home & mind.
END OF WINTER RITUAL: GROUNDHOGS, Badgers, and Serpents were seen as forms of weather divination. Their behavior and response to the weather is said to foretell the end of winter. Honor the end of Winter with bells and ruckus to scare away the gods of Winter. Say a prayer, sing a song, or recite a blessing to celebrate the warmer days ahead.
HONOR BRIGID: The Irish Goddess Brigid brings the light and joy of Spring. Honor her power with crafts like making a Brigid's Cross or Corn Doll. Learn about her.
DEDICATION RITUAL: Whether you are dedicating yourself to a deity or a vision of your future, use this time of new beginnings and early Spring to commit yourself to what you value. Light a candle as a flame-keeper of your chosen devotion. Burn your candle at the window and radiate your passion, and commitment out to the Universe. Use the light of the candle to do some fire scrying to gain insight & inspiration.
