13 Ways to Re-Ignite Your Creativity with Magic

I am an artist

Magic happens when you say these words aloud, “I am an artist.”

You are here to create.

Getting started is hard. Inertia is real.
Falling out of practice is easy. I have done it a hundred times.
Making space for your unique essence to create art is hard.
But, it gets easier with practice.

Here are 13 ways to reignite your creative practice if things have gone stale.

1. Envision a positive experience.

Create a clear vision of your dream experience. Get clear on what you want. Visualize how it will feel. Conjure the energy of your work. Imagine how others might receive it. Sit with this feeling.

2. Set intentions. Say a prayer.

LIGHT A CANDLE and declare your intention: What are you here to experience? Gather the feeling into your heart-space and speak this dream to the Multiverse. You are an artist. Commit to showing up for your craft. Speak, chant, hum, sing your prayers of intent.

3. Gather supplies. Make them accessible and visible.

Put your hands on your materials. Pull out all the supplies you want to work with. Spread them out. Clear a desk or a bookshelf to make space them. You know, “out of sight, out of mind.” So, make them seen!

4. Make a sacred space with clear boundaries.

Let everyone know where you are going to make art. Set boundaries by explaining to folks what is and is not allowed in this space. For example: “This space is only for art.” or “This spaces is also an art space. We make sure it is clear and clean.” or “During the day, this is a common space, but in the evening, this is my art space.”

5. Make a date.

Put it on the calendar. Tell your family and friends. Ask for their help in creating this sacred and creative time. LIGHT A CANDLE. Get dressed up for the occasion (a smock/apron?). Play some music. Pour yourself a fancy drink.

6. Consecrate your tools.

To ‘consecrate’ is to declare a thing sacred to you. It becomes an official member of your Spiritual Support Team. Before you consecrate an item, be sure to get permission. For example, ask your computer if they want to become partners in magic with you. If you sense consent, make your commitment and fellowship official with a ritual.

7. Map your inspiration.

This idea comes from my dear friend, Tao. He sent me a mind map showing where and when he finds inspiration for his art. Recall memories of feeling connected to your Creative Spirit. Consider the elements that light you up. What factors move you to make?

8. Be playful.

Don’t take yourself so seriously. Make something. Anything. It is all an experiment. Throw away societal expectations, patriarchal programming, gender norms, fear, perfectionism, doubt… Let it all go and follow the fun.

9. Follow your curiosity.

What do you want to geek out on? What peaks your interest and challenges you to know more?

Follow the fun. Do something different. Look failure in the eye, and just try.

The things that light you up are breadcrumbs… leading you to your joy, purpose, and power. Let your wonder guide your wandering.

10. sync up with the moon.

Full moons can be a good time to share what you have created. Dark moons are conducive to quiet retreats. The new moon might be a good time to start a new project.

11. Take a nap.

Sometimes the tank is empty. Give your body the resources it needs. Eat, drink water, stretch… you care for you.

12. Ask for a vision.

Before you fall asleep, ask for a dream. Call on a messenger spirit, like Archangel Gabriel, to bring you a vision of work of art. Visions may also come during the day while meditating, journeying, exercising, etc…

13. Color Magic

What energy are you conjuring with your creativity? What colors do you associate it?

Make a mood board, color grid, or simply play with the colors that resonate with your intentions.
