The Best Tips for Creating a Full Moon Ritual (solo or with friends).

Harness the power of the full moon to support your magic.

Working with the full moon is an ancient practice that connects you with power, intuition, and abundance. Tending to the moon and its phases helps us create a healthy relationship with change. We align with the energy of the cycles, welcoming the medicine and magic of each phase as it ebbs and flows.

The Energy of the Full Moon

When the moon is full, it is climaxing. This could feel like celebration-vibes. This can also feel overwhelmed and full of feelings. In this phase the energy is “culminating,” which comes from the word to ‘summit.” The moon’s energy peaks at this point in cycle, similar to the Sun which peaks at Summer Solstice. This is the energy of ovulating in the menstrual cycle. At the full moon, La Luna is potent and loud. She illuminates the dark corners of our life and amplifies our intuitive and psychic powers.

Aligned practices at the Full Moon

When creating a ritual for the full moon, you want to choose an activity that aligns with its energy in order to tap into that frequency and harness the power of its wave.

Here are some full-moony activities:

  • Celebrate. Dance, sing, and gather. Call down the power of the moon and bask in her light.

  • Charge objects under the light of the full moon to infuse them with that strong lunar energy.

  • Make moon water and lunar infusions (aka “moon tea”), asking the moon to infuse them with her powers of mystery and magic.

Tugging on our emotions, the full  moon invites us to reflect and pray. The full moon can amplify the quality of your vibration, so be mindful of your frequency and shift your energy toward joy, love, compassion, and peace whenever you can. Prayer, for me, is the act of sitting within the energy of my desired life. Call upon the energy of love, fill your heart space with it, and then send that energy out into the world. The full moon will amplify your vibration and your desires are more potent (for good/ill).

Psychic and intuitive powers are also heightened at the full moon. Use this time to do divination and/or shamanic journeying.

Reflection Questions at the Full Moon

Use the following prompts to help you reflect on your vibration and your journey:

  1. What is full?

  2. What are you proud of?

  3. What has increased since the new moon?

  4. Where is there resistance?

  5. How can you loosen and let go?

Embody the energy of the Full Moon

When we embody the energy of something (like a moon phase, a Tarot card, or archetype), we are bringing that energy into our physical experience. It anchors that energy into the worldly realm, giving it greater potency and engaging you as a magician.

The first method is to “Act it Out.” Replicate the full moon’s story of culmination in mundane acts of climaxing: Be ‘extra’ when you go out. Turn all the lights off and fill the room with candles and flashlights to echo the full moon’s ability to illuminate things in the dark. Orgasm. Go “all out” on a project.

The second method of embodiment is to “Wear the Energy.” Call in the energy of the full moon with shimmery fabrics, or dress all in white. Adorn yourself with moon-shaped jewelry. Put on makeup that feels a little ‘extra.’

The third method is to create something that is infused with the moon power. The idea is to bring the power of the full moon into a physical object. Paint a watercolor of the moon and its phases. Bake a pie or black and white cookies.

Tarot Spreads for the Full Moon

When creating a Full Moon Ritual, consider what you truly need. What experience does your soul wish to experience? How can you shift your vibration to thrive in this moment? When you know what you need, then you can create a ritual that serves your purpose.

For example, on a previous full moon I wanted to quit eating sugar, I wrote the word, “sugar” on a piece of paper, burned it, and sent the ashes down stream. This midsummer, on the full moon, I wanted a celebration. I set a beautiful table with bouquets of wildflowers and herbs. We sang, told stories, shared our accomplishments, and made art. Sometimes a full moon inspires a much-needed rage fest. Write it all down, bury it, burn it, cut it up and make it art.

The full moon gives us the power to bring to light what felt dark, icky, shameful, dangerous, or unworthy. In the light of the full moon, we can heal.
