Notice Small Signs of Life - A Mindfulness Exercise

The challenge of this mindfulness exercise is to notice the SMALL Signs of Life. More often than not its the bugs, mice, and birds that are overlooked in our everyday. They blend into the scenery. They lack significance in their commonness.

Look for a small critter in your home (possibly an unwelcome one), and take a moment to examine it. Notice the way it moves, and investigate its body. Notice, too, what you feel. Honestly, I think slugs are gross. But, curiosity (a good friend of mindfulness) helps us move beyond aversion into discovery. And then, we feel the gift of paying attention. There are wonders in even the smallest of creatures.

If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.

Photograph Notes: This snail was discovered while pruning roses, and I set him aside to keep him safe. Little August discovered him 30 minutes later, his first snail. We examined his antenae, shell, and slimy body… It was a lovely moment of inquiry and discovery.
